Gardening for Stress Relief

Some people would wonder how such a tedious task as gardening can bring relief to people plagued with stress.  But, plenty of research has al read y been conducted about gardening for stress relief and all of these lead to one common conclusion – gardening can indeed relieve stress. Although some people may see it as a chore but, it is the kind of task which allow s one opportunities to get in touch with nature and be allow ed to be mentally and physically restored by it.  The following is a list of some of the health benefits of gardening:

Physical Exercise

Gardening is an activity which helps people, especially adults and those who are having a sedentary lifestyle the chance to meet their required level of physical exercise. Setting aside at least 30 minutes of gardening in most days of the week is al read y enough for individuals to reap the benefits of such activity. When an individual pushes a mower, carries the soil, pulls the weeds, and digs some holes while gardening he is at the same time doing some weight – bearing and low-impact exercises. These activities help people improve the bone-mineral density of their entire body.

Contrary to other forms of exercises performed in the gym, gardening tasks vary as the season changes. Gardening tasks will never become boring because the season varies, plants and weeds start to grow, new seedlings bloom from time to time and all these changes would require one to be exposed to different tasks as well. This is also the same reason why a lot of older people would most likely to stick to their gardening routine. They see it as an activity that spares them from other monotonous forms of exercises. Therefore, there are more chances for them to de-stress every now and then and continuously reap its benefits.

Sunlight Exposure

Moderate exposure to early morning sunlight coupled with fresh air can do wonders to relieve one from stress.  Studies have shown that sunlight is capable of triggering those responses in the brain that makes the person feel happy.  This is another reason why gardening can boost an individual’s mood which can also help reduce his risk for high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases. Health experts agree that sun exposure helps people boost their brain’s capability to release endorphins, serotonin and melatonin. Serotonins and endorphins make people feel good amid stressful situations. Melatonin is a kind of nocturnal chemical in the brain that makes it easier for people to sleep at night which is very important especially to those who are leading a stressful life.

Meditation Exercise

Time spent for gardening enables an individual to have a break from those stressful daily situations.  It is a kind of activity that gives the person what others call as “me-time”. It provides time for meditation as the person indulges in a peaceful activity.  As an individual focuses on the gardening tasks at hand, his brain will also be given a break from those negative thoughts that only cause much stress to an individual.

Positive Perspective

Gardening makes people become hopeful.  When one decides to indulge in gardening, he just cannot help but be hopeful that his garden will bloom and will enable him to reap its fruits and other benefits.  Every time the person plants a new seed and waters them,   a sense of fulfillment can also be felt which can make a person become more positive in everything that he does not just in gardening. It gives the person the chance to put all his positive perspectives into place. When this happens, the person will less likely to w allow in negative thoughts that lead to stress and anxiety.

Gardening also provides easy access to fruits and vegetables which gives people the chance to prepare healthy foods during mealtime. Not to mention the fact that these healthy foods can make people less vulnerable to the debilitating effects of stress and anxiety. The road to longevity and healthy life entail more than just gardening.  However, the benefits that one will be able to gain from gardening can have enormous health impacts to those people who choose to indulge in it.
